The suit came two days after the EPA announced its long-awaited regulations on land disposal of hazardous industrial wastes. Environmentalists strongly criticized the rules as inadequate.
The lawsuit alleges that the EPA's regulatory requirements don't go far enough and that the agency is failing to abide by the standards of the federal Resources Conservation and Recovery Act, which directs the EPA to ensure that toxic industrial wastes are disposed of safely.
The suit was filed in U.S. Circuit Court by the Sierra Club, the Environmental Defense Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Hazardous Waste Treatment Council. The council is a trade group that represents hazardous waste treatment companies. - Associated Press
