FERRUM STUDENT GUILTY OF ILLEGAL ALCOHOL SERVICE

A Ferrum College student, who police say ran keg parties at a fraternity house near the Franklin County campus, was found guilty Thursday of serving alcohol without a license.

Kevin Ackerman of Dale City also was found guilty of maintaining a common nuisance.

Charges against a second Ferrum student, Larry Nash, were dismissed in Franklin County General District Court because authorities could not place him at the April 21 party, on which the charges were based.

The party was held at a rented farmhouse on Virginia 40 that is the headquarters for a fraternity not affiliated with Ferrum College. Authorities say the house has been the scene of frequent beer parties.

Last month, undercover state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board officers raided a party where admission was charged.

Thursday, Judge William Alexander II found Ackerman responsible for the party and sentenced him to five weekends of community service and fined him $200.

Ackerman will begin his community service work next fall when he returns for his senior year at Ferrum College.
