HIGH ASSESSMENTS, TAXES DRIVE FOLKS OUT

RECENT editorials suggest that your paper favors raising tax revenues in Roanoke City and Roanoke County by yearly increasing real-estate assessments. Many homes in this community are now selling at less than their assesed value.

Has it ever occurred to you or to local politicians that high real-estate assessments and large personal property taxes in the city and county result in local families relocating to Botetourt, Bedford or Franklin counties where tax rates are much lower?

Also, many employees of large corporations being transferred to Roanoke are deciding to live in outlying areas to escape these taxes.
