The youth, who was not identified by Roanoke police or school officials, first told authorities that he was shot by someone in a passing car at a Metro bus stop at Grandin Road and Brandon Avenue.
But when questioned later about the entry angle of the gunshot wound to his left calf, the youth admitted that he had been examining a handgun when it accidentally discharged, police said.
The youth told authorities that he had found the gun and was planning to turn it in to police later.
Patrick Henry Principal Elizabeth Lee said Friday that she had no reason to believe the youth had the gun on campus, based on information she had received from police.
The youth, an alternative education student, was on his way to classes at Lucy Addison Middle School when the accident happened about 11 a.m.
