NEW RIVER VALLEY OFFERS VARIETY OF NIGHT LIFE

New River Valley residents as well as Virginia Tech and Radford University students have a wide choice of nightspots depending on the desired mood or atmosphere, preference of music and choice of food and drink.

The Balcony, near Tech in downtown Blacksburg, tries to change as the year goes on to accommodate college students, said Manager Al Brauns.

"We try to keep [the bar] new and different," he said.

Regular special events include Ladies Lock Up on Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday nights are sponsored by Tech fraternities, and different bands perform on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Daily food and beer specials are also provided.

BT's Restaurant in Radford provides a warm and friendly atmosphere, an extensive beverage list, recorded music which caters to the college students and family environment and a daily happy hour and reduced prices from 3 to 7 p.m., said Manager Bill Landes.

Buddy's in Blacksburg is unusual because it stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and features a basic breakfast, sandwich and dinner menu. There are daily lunch and dinner specials, live entertainment every night of the week, Saturday and Sunday brunches and daily happy hours from 2 to 9 p.m.

Sunday nights feature the Comedy Club, where professionals and amateurs, often college students, have a chance to perform.

The Cellar is known for its relaxed atmosphere, said manager Kevin Long.

It caters to college students, occasionally has bands and features a large-screen television.

Crickett's provides a designated dance area in the loft, serves beer, wine and mixed drinks, holds regular happy hours, has yes/no stamps for students under 21 years of age, Tuesday through Thursday and has a live disc jockey or occasional live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights.

Jacob's Lounge in the Blacksburg Marriott is known for its strobe lights and dance floor.

Sunday night is WPSK Country Night, featuring country music. Tuesday night is WROV Night, with music of the '60s and '70s. Wednesday night is Ladies Night, and Thursday and Friday nights are sponsored by Tech fraternities. Jacob's Lounge is open from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.

The London Underground, a relative newcomer to the Blacksburg fun scene - they opened less than a year ago - offers dart lanes and has happy hours every day from opening at 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Dart tournaments are held Sunday and Tuesday and leagues play on Monday.

Sackett's Night Club in Radford, with a 1,100-square-foot, lighted dance floor, boasts the distinction of being the largest nightclub in the valley. There's live entertainment every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night, daily food and drink specials from 4 to 7 and a munchie bar on Friday, with free hors d'oeuvres and dip.

South Main Cafe in Blacksburg books live entertainment every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night and provides stamps for 18- to 20-year-olds.

Blacksburg's Ton-80 also offers dart lanes and has has a pro-shop which carries a complete line of dart supplies. Ton-80 is recognized as having largest selection of beer in the state with more than 250 imported beers from over 40 countries.

The Vickers Switch Lounge at the Holiday Inn in Blacksburg provides students and local residents a daily happy hour from 2 to 7 p.m., serves hors d'oeuvres from 5 to 7 p.m. and has live entertainment in the evenings Monday through Saturday performing anything from Top-40 songs to country music.
