NEWCOMERS MUST OBTAIN CAR DECALS

Besides state motor vehicle registration, newcomers to the New River Valley also must obtain city, county or town decals each year from one of 18 local governments.

Radford residents obtain city decals, county residents not within town limits obtain county decals and town residents obtain town decals.

In most jurisdictions, a decal will not be issued until the personal property tax on the vehicle is paid.

Here's where to get them, how much they cost and when you have to have them:

Radford: Treasurer's office, municipal building; Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 731-3661; cars $15, motorcycles $8.50; by April 15.

Montgomery County: Treasurer's office, county courthouse, Christiansburg; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 382-5723; cars $15; station wagons, jeeps and trucks $10; motorcycles $7.50; by March 31.

Blacksburg: Treasurer's office, municipal building; Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 961-1105; cars $15, Motorcycles $8; by June 15.

Christainsburg: Treasurer's office, municipal building; Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 382-6128; cars $10, motorcycles $4; by April 15.

Pulaski County: Treasurer's office, Third Street courthouse, Pulaski; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 980-3833; cars and trucks $20; motorcycles $8; by April 1.

Pulaski: Town office; Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 980-1000; cars $20, motorcycles $8; by Aug. 31.

Dublin: Town office; Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 674-4731; cars $10, motorcycles $3; by April 15.

Floyd County: Treasurer's office, county courthouse, Floyd; Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to noon; 745-2715; vehicles up to 4,000 pounds $20; vehicles over 4,000 pounds $25; farm vehicles $15; motorcycles $10; by April 15.

Floyd: Town office; Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 745-2565; all vehicles $5; by April 15.

Giles County: Treasurer's office, new county office building, Pearisburg; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 921-1240; cars and trucks $15; motorcycles $7; by April 15.

Pearisburg: Town office; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 921-1222; cars and trucks $15; by April 15. Motorcycles not required to have decals.

Narrows: Town office; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; 726-2423; cars and trucks $15, motorcycles $7.50; by April 15.

Rich Creek: Town office; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; 726-3260; cars and trucks $15; motorcycles $7.50; by April 15.

Glen Lyn: Town hall; Monday and Friday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; 726-7075; cars and trucks $15; by April 15. Motorcycles are handled as needed.
