Caldwell had two runs batted in, as did Brandon Smith, who knocked in the decisive run with a single to left field. Radford (8-10) plays at Christiansburg on Wednesday.
In another first-round game at Hillsville, James Phillips, who entered in relief of Matt Montgomery with two on and two out in fourth, drove in the winning run in the fifth inning to give Carroll County a 5-4 victory.
Phillips' ground-rule double broke a 4-4 tie. Phillips pitched 3 innings, allowed no hits, walked one and struck out four. Kevin Lindsey had two hits and scored twice, and Shannon Phillips had a two-run double in Carroll's four-run first inning. The Cavaliers (12-6) go to Giles on Wednesday for a semifinal game.
In other baseball:
At Bedford, Liberty committed six errors in losing to Appomattox 5-2 in the first round of the Seminole District Tournament. The Minutemen (12-7) were led by Keith Coles, who pitched a complete game and had two hits.
Also in the Seminole, catcher Kirk Chambers singled home Rusty Branch in the seventh inning to give Buckingham a 5-4 victory against Jefferson Forest at Buckingham. Chambers scored the tying run in the sixth on a single by Quincy Booker.
Buckingham (13-5-1) plays Brookville at 7 Wednesday night at Altavista. Rustburg plays Appommatox after that game.
Northside (7-11) led 2-0 before visiting Staunton River got all its runs in the fourth inning to win 7-4 in the first round of the Blue Ridge District tournament. Freshman Brian Hawkins went 2-for-4 in leading Staunton River (7-9), which plays Alleghany at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Moneta.
In the other Blue Ridge first-rounder, William Byrd edged Salem 5-4 as the Terriers put four singles together in a four-run fifth inning. Chris Duncan had three hits, one RBI and one run scored. Byrd plays Lord Botetourt in a semifinal Wednesday at Moneta.
\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Salem whipped Brookville 8-1 in the Region III girls' tennis team semifinals at Salem. Martinsville received a bye and will play Salem for the team championship today at 9 a.m.
\ BOYS' TENNIS: Salem defeated Martinsville 6-3 at Martinsville and Jefferson Forest blanked Fieldale-Collinsville 9-0 at Ridgeway in the Region III team semifinals. Salem plays Jefferson Forest for the team championship at 9 a.m. today.
In the singles semifinals, Jesus Nevarez of Rustburg defeated Lee Bowling of Patrick County 6-2, 6-3 and Tommy McDonald of Salem defeated Mathew Engel of Martinsville 6-3, 6-0. The winners face each other today.
In doubles semifinals, Thom Ferguson and Glen Keener of Jefferson Forest defeated Carlos Sagrado and Ronnie Bennett of Fieldale-Collinsville 6-0, 6-3. McDonald and Justin Barham of Salem defeated Engel and Jeff Austin of Martinsville 6-1, 6-3. The winners play each other this afternoon.
Glenvar won its first Region C championship in three years with a 7-2 victory against Lexington at Riner. The Highlanders beat Narrows 9-0 in the semifinals. Individual singles and doubles will be played today at Riner.
\ SOFTBALL: At Liberty, Carolyn Karnes allowed no walks and struck out five in pitching a no-hitter as Liberty crushed Nelson County 21-0 in the first round of the Seminole District tournament. Davonne Witt was 4-for-5 with five RBI for Liberty (17-2), which will play the winner of the Forest-Gretna game at 7 tonight.
Northside and William Byrd won first-round games in the Blue Ridge District tournament. At Northside, the Vikings beat Alleghany 8-5 as April Young and Leigh Palmari slammed solo home runs. Michelle Vandergrift had three hits, and Marcie Hufton and Jenny Craft each had two as William Byrd thumped Staunton River 11-5 at Moneta.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Bedford, Shawn Warner scored the only goal in the Seminole District tournament championship game as Nelson County beat Jefferson Forest 1-0.
The pairings for the Region III tournament, which begins Wednesday at Bedford are Nelson County vs. Martinsville at 5 p.m. and Jefferson Forest vs. William Byrd at 7 p.m. The championship will be at 7 p.m. Friday.
\ WRESTLING: Seven qualified for the nationals at the 1990 freestyle/Greco-Roman state championship at Hermitage High Schoool in Richmond.
At 98 pounds, Tim Nininger of Christiansburg placed second in freestyle, first in Greco-Roman; Keno Shepherd of William Fleming was fifth in freestyle (105.5 pounds), second in Greco-Roman (98); Adam Williams of Cave Spring second in Greco-Roman (123); Scott Southall of Franklin County was fourth in Greco-Roman (123); Jeff Tatum of Franklin County was third in freestyle (132); Chuck Ellis of Franklin County third in Greco-Roman (143), and Hanasi Menesee of Franklin County was fourth in Greco-Roman (143).
All qualify for the nationals July 14-22 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
