The Bulls' right-hander blanked Salem for six innings and earned a 3-0 victory as Durham snapped the Bucs' three-game winning streak. Czarnik has not given up a run in 30 innings.
Czarnik (4-1) started an earlier game, but Bulls' manager Grady Little said the pitcher wasn't in the rotation at that point.
"The reason he's starting now is that no one has been able to score a run off him," Little said. "He deserved a chance to see what he can do."
The Bucs, who scored 12 runs on Sunday, didn't even come close against Czarnik. He gave up a pair of two-out singles, and walked leadoff hitter Rob Bailey in the sixth. Bailey didn't get past second as Czarnik induced three straight grounders.
"He moved the ball in and out [and] kept us off balance most of the night," said Stan Cliburn, Salem's manager. "When we had a chance to do something, he'd make an outstanding pitch."
The tough-luck loser was Salem knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (2-2), who gave up six hits and three runs in eight innings. Wakefield missed pitching the Bucs' first complete game by an inning, but he had reached the pitch limit (115).
Durham scored in the second inning after Wakefield hit leadoff hitter Brian Deak. Two outs later, Kevin Castleberry doubled home the run.
Wakefield worked out of a couple of ticklish situations. In the fourth, he gave up a leadoff double to Keith Mitchell and Theron Todd tripled in the run, then retired the side without further damage. Wakefield also walked the leadoff batter in the eighth but picked off the Durham runner.
Salem's best chance to score came in the eighth off reliever Skipper Wright, who gave up a two-out single to Bailey and hit Greg Sims. Bruce Schreiber, the league's second-leading hitter, flied out to end the threat.
\ BUCSHOTS: Schreiber, who hit .407 last week, was named Carolina League batter of the week. Frederick's Art Rhodes (1-0, 1.13 earned run average) was named the pitcher of the week. . . .
