As a result, Patrick Henry continued on in the Northwestern Region soccer quarterfinals Monday with a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Heritage, and the Knights' season ended with 3-2 loss to Stonewall Jackson of Manassas at River's Edge Sports Complex.
Michael Eddy and Michael Surrusco scored second-half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and rally Patrick Henry to the first regional soccer victory in school history.
The Patriots (10-2-2) will travel to Manassas on Wednesday to face Osborne, champion of the Commonwealth District.
Monday's game was different from the Patriots' previous two encounters with Heritage, which they won by a combined score of 7-1.
The Pioneers (7-9-1) contained the Patriots early and gained confidence. Thomas Leady gave Heritage the lead when he deflected a corner kick into the PH goal about 10 minutes into the second half.
With their season slipping away, the Patriots turned their play up several notches.
Eddy hit a rocket from 25 yards out to tie it. After several other runs missed, Surrusco blasted a pass from Jay McClaurin by Heritage goalie Zack Trogdon for the winner.
"Once Heritage scored, it kind of slapped them in the face," said coach Ed McMichael of his Patrick Henry team. "Our execution picked up significantly. When we play like for a whole game, we can be awesome."
If Cave Spring (9-5-1) had played the first 70 minutes as it did the last 10, the Knights, instead of Stonewall Jackson, probably would be playing Albemarle on Wednesday in Lynchburg.
But by the time Cave Spring found its stride, sophomore Dave Gryder had two goals, and the Raiders (11-1-1) were up 3-0.
Still, the Knights weren't dead. Bobby Ashworth scored unassisted with about seven minutes left, and four minutes later Thad Gilmore converted a pass from Ryan Manetta to draw Cave Spring to 3-2.
The Knights appeared to have the equalizer in the last minute when Mike Duffy knocked in a pass from Ashworth. But the celebration was short-lived when the line judge ruled Duffy offsides and disallowed the goal.
"I thought it hit a defender first which meant I was on sides," said Duffy. "But it doesn't matter what I thought. It's what the referee thought."
