The players being investigated in the incident, which allegedly occurred early Saturday, are right wing Dino Ciccarelli, left wing Geoff Courtnall and defensemen Neil Sheehy and Scott Stevens, said a law enforcement source who spoke only on the condition he not be identified.
The players' names also were reported by The Washington Post, The Washington Times and WRC-TV, who attributed their information to police sources.
District of Columbia police spokesman Lt. Reginald Smith said on Monday that no charges had been filed, and team officials had no comment on the allegations.
Ciccarelli, Courtnall and Stevens were key members of the Capitals, who advanced in the NHL playoffs to the Wales Conference final before losing to the Boston Bruins.
On Monday night, team officials, including owner Abe Pollin, many players and their wives attended a team dinner at a downtown Washington hotel.
As Pollin entered the hotel he said, "I don't know anything about" an investigation.
"It's crazy," Ciccarelli told The Times. "I can't say anything else on the advice of our attorney."
