Charles Darrell Shell, age 63, of June Drive, Roanoke, Virginia. Our friend, Darrell died Monday morning, May 14, 1990, at Lewis Gale Hospital. His wife, Anne Brown Shell; son, Charles Darrell Shell, Jr.; and daughter, Amy Elizabeth; and beloved family and friends will surely miss him. Born April 30, 1927, in Shell Creek, Tennessee, son of Creed Shell and Nola Vance Shell. Preceded in death by his father, Creed Shell; and two brothers, Donald Shell and Wade Shell. Funeral services will be held at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, Tennessee, Tuesday, May 15 at 8:00 p.m. Burial will follow Wednesday, May 16, 10:00 a.m. at Happy Valley Cemetery, Elizabethton, Tennessee. Memorial services will be Thursday, May 17, 1990, 11:00 a.m. at Walrond Drive, Roanoke, Virginia. As a principal-teacher in Tennessee, Shell coached football, basketball, track, tennis and baseball. A native of Tennessee, he moved to Roanoke County in 1967 when he was hired as Roanoke County Director of Parks and Recreation to initiate a recreation program. He was President of Virginia Parks and Recreation Society 1973-74, RADAR Board Member, League of Older Americans Board Member, Member of National Recreation Parks Association and awarded Fellows Award in 1981 by VRPS.
