DARRELL SHELL, COUNTY PARKS OFFICIAL, DIES

Darrell Shell, Roanoke County's first director of parks and recreation, died Monday. He was 63.

Shell, who inaugurated the department after park funding was approved in a 1967 bond referendum, headed the department for 20 years.

He also had served as president of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society and in 1981 received the society's Fellows Award, given to those who have made significant contributions to the recreation field.

Before coming to Roanoke County in 1967 to start the parks and recreation department, Shell was a principal and teacher in his native Tennessee, where he coached football, basketball, track, tennis and baseball.

A memorial service for Shell will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Walrond Park.
