RADFORD SCHOOL BOARD REAPPOINTMENTS MADE

City Council appointed George Ducker and Guy Gentry to Radford's School Board Monday following an interview session.

Ducker and Gentry were reappointed to three-year terms with Ducker representing the East Ward district and Gentry representing the West I District. Their terms will begin July 1.

Ducker said the past three years as a School Board member have been a learning experience. He said his main concern is continuing efforts to make Radford schools a quality school system.

According to Ducker, the most significant change over the past three years has been the reduction of tuition for non-resident students. He said 75 tuition students were needed to break even because the schools receive around $2,000 per student from state. Currently, Radford has 90 tuition students.

Gentry also commented on the school system's reputation. "Our school system is among the top things which brings people to Radford," Gentry said.

The relationship between City Council and the School Board is good even though they don't always agree, according to Gentry. He said there should be improved communication between the two.

In other business, Council set higher water- and sewer-connection fees. These fees haven't increased since 1984.

The water-connection fee will increase from $85 to $200 for a standard 3/4-inch line of less than 50 feet. Meter installation fees increased from $165 to $290. Sewer connection fees also increased to $450.

The wholesale water rate was increased to $1.15 per 1,000 gallons for jurisdictions outside Radford that are not covered by another contract.

Council also set a higher rate schedule for Radford's emergency medical services.

The new rates are $100 for basic life suppport services and $150 for advanced life support services. These rates will go into effect July 1.

In other matters, council:

Will hold another public hearing concerning the closing of the alley near Michael Canada's property because the proper procedure wasn't followed before.

Approved an in-kind contribution not to exceed $3,000 to "The Long Way Home," Radford's outdoor historical drama.
