BANK ROBBER STILL AT LARGE

Police were still looking Tuesday for the masked man who robbed the First National Bank of Christiansburg Friday afternoon.

The man was described as white, about 5-foot-8 and with a medium build.

When he walked into the lobby of the bank on Roanoke Street about 12:15 p.m., he was wearing green overalls, tennis sneakers, a maroon and gold winter hat and a Halloween skeleton mask.

Police have been showing pictures of the man taken by cameras in the bank to people at local malls and department stores.

Police said the man stole a blue Dodge from the parking lot at Rose's department store on North Franklin Street and drove to the bank near Hill's department store.

He threatened a bank teller with what he said was a gun hidden in a plastic bag. Police said they are not sure whether he actually had a gun.

They also are not disclosing how much money was taken.

After the robbery, the man ditched the stolen car at the Food Lion parking lot across from Rose's and took off in another car, which police believed was his own. They have no description of that car.

Investigator G.L. Brumfield said police have few clues. Anyone with information, or anyone who might have seen anything suspicious at the parking lots at either Rose's or the Food Lion between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday, are asked to contact Brumfield at 382-3131 or FBI Agent Pat Rutzinski at 344-5561.
