Eight planes began scanning the east ridge between Front Royal and Luray to try to pinpoint the origin of the signal, Lt. Mary Kay Baun of the Civil Air Patrol said.
The maroon-and-white Cessna 210 left Manteo, N.C., at 1:30 a.m. Thursday headed for Manassas, with an interim stop at Winchester to drop off a passenger.
The pilot and five passengers had been on a fishing outing to North Carolina's Outer Banks. The Civil Air Patrol has not confirmed the identities of the six men at the request of the family members.
