Sen. David Durenberger, R-Minn., held his first private talks with the Senate Ethics Committee since the panel found "substantial credible evidence" that he violated federal law and Senate rules. Sen. Warren Rudman, R-N.H., committee vice chairman, told reporters that Wednesday's meeting with Durenberger did not resolve the case, which is set for hearings beginning June 12.

Actress Paulette Goddard left New York University more than $20 million and the papers of her late husband, novelist Erich Maria Remarque, the university said today.

Goddard, who died April 23 in Switzerland, endowed seven new professorships with $1.2 million each, NYU President John Brademas said.
