Police were called to a two-story, white frame house on the 1800 block of Hanover Avenue at about 8:30 a.m. today to investigate a report of a stabbing.
The woman, whom authorities declined to identify immediately after the incident, was alive when police arrived.
Paramedics worked to save her as she was carried in a stretcher down the front steps of the house, but the woman was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Police were searching for a suspect who apparently fled the house. Authorities declined to elaborate, except to say that the man was "known to the woman" who was killed.
As police arrived, a small crowd gathered outside the house, directly across the street from the Glorious Church of God in Christ.
A neighbor, who asked that she not be identified, said she had heard no signs of a dispute from her nearby home shortly before noticing that police had arrived.
