PITTSTON CUTS WORK FORCE AT 2 MINES

The Pittston Coal Group announced Thursday that the workforce at two of its mines would be halved effective May 20.

The company said it was taking the action to cut the combined workforce at its Maple House and Open Fork mines in Southwest Virginia from 48 to 24 because of adverse mining conditions related to the age of the mines and the fact that their coal reserves are nearly depleted.
