FRANKLIN COUNTY SOARS TO RVD TITLE

All three games in the Roanoke Valley District softball tournament were decided in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday, with Franklin County beating Cave Spring 4-3 in the championship game.

After losing a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh, the Eagles capitalized on a walk, wild pitch, error and two singles to score two runs of their own and win the title.

Franklin County advanced to the final by defeating William Fleming 10-9. Cave Spring beat Patrick Henry 4-3.

Cave Spring and Franklin County advance to the Northwestern Region tournament, which starts Monday.

At Appomattox, Pam Karnes went 3-for-3 with four RBI, and her twin sister Carolyn pitched a three-hitter as Liberty defeated Appomattox 24-1 to win the Seminole District title.

Liberty and Brookville, the regular-season champion, advance to the Region III tournament beginning Tuesday.

Kristin Humphries went 4-for-4, including two home runs and a double, and North Cross cruised to a 19-0 victory over Stuart Hall in the first round of the Blue Ridge Conference softball tournament.

The Raiders advance to the semifinal round, which begins Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Wasena Park, against Roanoke Valley Christian.

At Lynchburg, Cheree Miller was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Stephanie Wright was 2-for-2 with an RBI as Roanoke Valley Christian got past Timberlake 7-5 in a Blue Ridge Conference tournament game.

Carol Sweeney went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as Roanoke Catholic rolled past visiting Holy Cross 17-10 in the first round of the Blue Ridge Conference tournament.

At Hot Springs, April Watt had four hits and Tammi Beamer and Stephanie Martin added three each as Glenvar crushed Craig County 17-7 to win the Pioneer District softball tournament.

The Highlanders had advanced with a 6-2 semifinal victory over Bath County. Craig County upset top-seeded Parry McCluer 8-3 in the other semifinal, but the Fighting Blues will advance to the Region C tournament along with Glenvar (12-2) because they won the regular-season title.

\ BASEBALL: At Shawsville, the Shawnees scored 11 runs in the fourth inning and went on to an 11-8 victory over Fort Chiswell in the Mountain Empire District tournament final at Shawsville.
