VIRGINIA'S JONES COMPLETES STAFF

Virginia basketball coach Jeff Jones has completed his staff by hiring 35-year-old Dennis Wolff as a full-time assistant coach.

Wolff was an assistant at Wake Forest for four years before moving this past year to Wolff Southern Methodist. He previously had coached at St. Bonaventure.

"He comes highly recommended for his basketball knowledge, his work ethic and his loyalty," Jones said. "He's a proven recruiter, well-organized [and] with contacts throughout the ACC area and Northeast."

A native of Queens, N.Y., Wolff began his college career at LSU before transferring after two years to Connecticut. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., before serving for two years as the head coach at Connecticut College, a Division III program which, under Wolff's direction, enjoyed its first two winning seasons.

Wolff joins a UVa staff that includes full-time assistant Brian Ellerbe, who came from South Carolina; part-time assistant Tom Perrin, and graduate assistant Greg Domecq. Perrin and Domecq are holdovers from the staff of former coach Terry Holland.

Jones had expressed interest in Connecticut assistant Dave Leitao, but Leitao dropped out of the running last week when it was expected he would take the job.

"I had held off talking to Dennis [Wolff] until I knew what would happen with Leitao," Jones said. "That's something I learned from Coach Holland. There are certain guys you don't get involved with unless you know they're at the top of your list."

Jones talked to former George Washington head coach John Kuester and Richmond assistant Pat Dennis before bringing Wolff to Charlottesville for two days this week.

"I wanted to get to know him on a personal basis because we're going to spend a lot of time together both here and on the road recruiting," Jones said. "I knew he played a major role in [signing] some of the kids at Wake Forest - Chris King and Derrick McQueen - and had a lot of experience in a number of areas."

Jones said his next priority is to establish recruiting contacts in preparation for the next observation period starting July 7.

The UVa basketball office has received a call from Maryland sophomore Walt Williams, who has received permission to speak with other schools in the wake of Maryland's two-year ban from postseason play; however, Jones and Williams have not spoken.
