The supervisors, in a meeting Monday, voted 4-3 to hire Bentley. He succeeds Dan Collins, who resigned under pressure from newly elected board members who took office in January.
Bentley, who lives in Washington County near Bristol, is a 1955 Emory & Henry College graduate and has taken graduate courses at East Tennessee State University.
He joined Speery Corp. at Bristol in 1958, and remained there until 1987 when Speery merged with another company to become Unisys and eventually closed its Bristol plant. He has worked since then with Calten Industries of Bristol.
