Rich Beggs doubled home Jim Fredo - who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning - to provide the winning run for Rutgers-Newark in the eighth inning.
Ferrum had an opportunity to tie the score in the top of the ninth. Freddie Stovall walked and was sacrificed to second by Brian Coleman. After an out, Mike Bryant singled to center, but Stovall was thrown out at the plate. Russell Walton flied to center to end the game.
Ferrum advanced to the afternoon game by defeating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 3-2 in a morning game.
Rusty Lang and Heath Burcher hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the third inning to give Ferrum a 2-1 lead against RPI. After Rensselaer tied the score at 2, Eric Owens scored the winning run on a suicide squeeze by Chris Holt in the sixth.
Scott Clawson relieved Wallace Chitwood in the sixth and picked up the victory.
The Panthers finished their season with a 28-9 record.
Rutgers-Newark (26-13) will play Montclair State today in the final and needs to beat the Indians twice to win the championship.
