SEMINOLES END HOKIES' SEASON

After knocking off Cincinnati 3-2 Saturday morning in the Metro Conference baseball tournament, fourth-seeded Virginia Tech was eliminated by No. 1 seed Florida State in the night game, 12-5.

Hokies pitchers combined to walk nine Seminoles batters, seven of which eventually scored. Tech also missed offensive opportunities, stranding eight runners in scoring position.

Florida State catcher Pete Grifol went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Seminoles (52-13), ranked third in the country. Len Wentz led the Hokies with two hits and two RBI. Virginia Tech finished its season with a 36-22 record.

Florida State will face sixth-seeded Cincinnati (23-28) - who surprised the Seminoles 5-4 in an earlier tournament game - for the championship today.

In Tech's win against Cincinnati, Hokies' starter Scott Sorkin allowed one hit through five innings, and relievers Tim Fenn and former Patrick County pitcher Brad Clontz gave up two hits the rest of the way.

Tech center fielder Shaun Thomas hit a solo homer, and the Hokies scored twice in the fourth inning with the help of three Bearcat errors.
