North Yemen's pro-Western parliament on Monday approved a plan by President
Ali Abdullah Saleh to merge Tuesday with socialist South Yemen, official radio
reports in North Yemen said. A united Yemen would be the second such union
between two Arab states in this century. In the 1950s, Egypt and Syria joined
as the United Arab Republic, but the merger collapsed after three years.
