Nominations were made at a Board of Supervisors hearing to fill the position from Election District B-81, commonly called the Little River District.
Whitlock's interest in the position was not well known before the meeting. An office manager at IGA grocery in Floyd, she has been involved in the Floyd schools as a parent for about 14 years. She has been a substitute teacher and received a state Lifetime PTA Membership award from Check Elementary's PTA.
"The No. 1 priority is always going to be the education of the children, that's the main goal," Whitlock said when contacted after the meeting. "I'm not saying the board we have now is not trying to do that.
"One thing I would like is a better working relationship between the School Board and the Board of Supervisors. . . . I feel that's a very important thing to have, especially in a rural county like ours. . . ."
Whitlock, who could not attend the public hearing, said parents in the district had approached her about seeking the School Board seat.
Meanwhile, Profitt's nomination was expected. He's held the School Board seat since October 1985 and announced that he would seek another four-year term. A lawyer with an office in Floyd, Profitt is serving as School Board chairman. And four of the five speakers at the hearing supported his reappointment.
The speakers supporting Profitt stressed his experience and legal knowledge and the fact that he has one child in the school system and another ready to enter.
"When I was chairman of the School Board, I felt comfortable to have an attorney at hand," said former School Board chairman Woodrow W. Clark.
Supervisors will consider the School Board appointment at a special meeting June 4. At Supervisor Howard Dickerson's request, each candidate will be interviewed for 30 minutes. The term begins July 1.
