BUSINESS ACTIVITY DIPS IN VIRGINIA

Virginia business activity declined .1 percent in the first quarter, partly because of higher initial unemployment claims, a shorter average factory work week and lower building permit values, according to the First Wachovia Southeast Business Index.

In the past year, the state's index has risen 1.5 percent while the 13-state region had growth of 2.1 percent. Employment in the state rose by .2 percent and the unemployment rate of 4 percent was the third lowest in the region. - Staff report
