The Bucs scored their first run in the second inning, but they could have had more.
Tim Hines led off with a single to left and moved to second on a one-out walk to Ben Shelton. Darwin Pennye singled to center, driving in Hines and sending Shelton to second. Tim Huyler then singled to right to load the bases, but Bulls starter Nate Minchey (3-3) struck out Rob Bailey and Greg Sims to end the threat.
Durham took the lead with three runs in its half of the inning.
The Bucs added a run when Bruce Schreiber scored on Hines' double-play grounder in the third. But Salem trailed 6-2 going to the ninth inning after stranding a runner at third in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

After Schreiber was hit by a pitch, Domingo Merejo hit into a double play as Sims took third. Hines then drove a Watson pitch over the wall in right-center, cutting the Bulls' lead to 6-4. Mandy Romero kept the rally going with a walk, but Eddie Mathews came on to get his first save by retiring Shelton on a grounder to second.
Starter Steve Buckholz (4-3) took the loss for Salem.
