SLASHING SUSPECT TO BE RETURNED

A man charged with slashing a Roanoke woman to death in her home Thursday has waived his right to fight extradition from Lawrence, Kan., where he was arrested Friday night.

James S. "Pete" Ware was expected to be returned to Roanoke today after saying he did not wish to fight extradition at a hearing Monday in Kansas, authorities said.

Ware, 24, is accused of killing Ophelia Laverne Wiley, 31, in her Hanover Avenue home Thursday morning, sending her 8-year-old son jumping from a second-story window to escape.

Wiley died a short time later from a knife wound to her throat.

Authorities believe that after the killing, Ware ran to a nearby housing project and hitched a ride to Covington with an unsuspecting motorist.

The driver, after leaving his van for a few minutes in Covington, returned to find it and his passenger missing.

He was arrested Friday night after he was unable to pay a toll at an off-ramp from Interstate 70 near Lawrence, authorities said.
