May Gardner Smith Burgess, age 69, passed away early Wednesday morning at Our Lady of the Valley Nursing Center after a long Alzheimer illness. The wife of Carter L. Burgess, she is survived by her husband and her children, Jane, Mary, Nan, Sue, Beth, and Carter, Jr.; by nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. David C. Watkins, and Jane Stuart Smith. The daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. Robert Hall Smith, Mrs. Burgess graduated from St. Catherine's in Richmond and attended Sweetbriar College. Friends may call at the family residence at 2951 Hemlock Rd., SW between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 1990. A brief service will be conducted by the Rev. Deborah Hunley at Christ Episcopal Church 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 1990. Burial will be private. The family suggests any memorials be contributed to the Alzheimers Association, 70 East Lake St., Suite 600, Chicago, Ill. 60601. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
