Payne, who has no opposition in the Nov. 6 election, said Tuesday he considered the unopposed nomination a vote of confidence.
"I would certainly hope the message is that people are supportive of the kind of job I'm doing on their behalf," he said.
"The fact that L.F. was unopposed for the nomination is an indicator of his growing strength and popularity within the Democratic Party rank-and-file," Ward Armstrong, district Democratic chairman, said in a statement Tuesday.
Because no other Democrat publicly showed interest in the job, nomination of the 44-year-old Nelson County millionaire and developer of the Wintergreen ski resort bypassed the usual route by which party convention delegates select a candidate.
