CHIROPRACTOR FILES LIBEL SUIT AGAINST RADIO EXECUTIVE

A Roanoke chiropractor has filed a $5 million libel lawsuit against the manager of a Roanoke radio station who allegedly called him a "quack" who was "not playing with a full deck."

Terry Gibbons, manager of radio stations WPVR and WFIR, is named in a lawsuit filed Wednesday in Roanoke Circuit Court by David M. Garst.

The suit takes issue with comments that Gibbons allegedly made to a reporter for The Chiropractic Journal, a trade magazine with a national circulation.

The comments, which were published in the Journal's May 5 edition, apparently relate to a decision by Gibbons not to allow Garst to appear on a radio program.

Gibbons is quoted in the suit as saying: "I have known the young man previously, and he is not playing with a full deck and I don't want him on my property. . . . Give me someone more qualified, someone who's not a quack, and I will put them on."

The suit claims that the remarks were made "wrongfully, maliciously and injuriously with a deliberate and willful intent to harm the plaintiff."

Gibbons declined to comment Wednesday.
