Several carriers said Wednesday they will match fare cuts that Trans World Airlines announced Tuesday. The new round of discounts cut fares by up to 30 percent and are available in most major markets. But the discounts apply only to tickets purchased by June 7 for travel Tuesday through Thursday, and they carry other restrictions as well.
The summertime round of fare-cutting began in earnest Monday when United Airlines advertised $35 discounts on fares of at least $175 in several major markets. But the United move itself was in response to coupons offered by other airlines, including American and Delta, through direct-mail marketing.
Tuesday, TWA upped the ante with its broad-based cut in ticket prices. American Airlines, the nation's largest airline, will match the TWA fare cuts in 48 states, but not on flights to Alaska or Hawaii. Delta also said it will match the fare in all of its markets. Pan American World Airways and USAir said they will match the fare cuts in some markets where they compete with TWA.
