A 1977 graduate of Virginia Tech, he helped direct a Lutheran camp in New York state before entering Luther Northwestern Seminary, where he was graduated in 1985. He is married to Kristin Hamson Gunsten and has two young daughters, Sarah and Anna.
\ A NEW MINISTER OF YOUTH, Gary Grogan, will join the staff of North Roanoke Baptist Church following his graduation from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is originally from Seneca, S.C.
\ JEAN COOLEY, a former staff member of Roanoke Area Ministries and Salem Presbyterian Church, will graduate Sunday from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. Cooley will become associate dean of the faculty of the seminary and work in guidance. Her husband, William, formerly pastor of Green Ridge Presbyterian Church, is now serving a Richmond congregation.
\ A FAMILY AND FRIENDS DAY SERVICE is planned Sunday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 502 Gilmer Ave. N.W. Elizabeth Clark will be guest speaker.
\ THE YOUTH CHOIR of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1563 Lafayette Blvd. N.W., will perform Sunday at 4 p.m.
\ THE WORLD OF ISLAM, an adult study, will be presented Sunday at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, Second and Church in downtown Roanoke. The Rev. Alvord M. Beardslee of the Hollins College religion faculty will lead the study. The program will begin with potluck supper at 5:30 p.m. The presentation will start at 6:30. A nursery will be available.
\ JERUSALEM BAPTIST CHURCH, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W., has scheduled its annual Memorial Day service for Monday at 1 p.m. The service is sponsored by the Women's Day Committee.
\ THE PRESBYTERIAN COMMUNITY CENTER, an ecumenical ministry to the needy based at 1228 Jamison Ave. S.E., has scheduled an open house June 3 from 1:30 to 6 p.m. George Pollash, director, said the center has recently been refurbished with new furniture, painting and rugs.
\ FREE ORGAN RECITALS in air-conditioned churches each Sunday afternoon at 3 are planned again this summer by the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The recitals will begin June 10 and continue through Sept. 2. Each recital will last 30 minutes. The programs are for families and are informal. A different church and musician will be featured each week.
