The good news is, the popular bakery will expand its line of goodies to include more gourmet items when it moves to its new location in Lowes Village on South Main Street, behind Hardee's.
And - not to worry - longtime customers of Our Daily Bread can still get the bakery's pastries downtown. PartyRama, a couple of blocks from the old location, has agreed to sell some items for Our Daily Bread.
The store will close March 28 and reopen June 1.
"Customers are our number one priority, and there are just not enough parking spaces for them at our present location. We only have four spaces for them to park," bakery manager Jenny Tu said.
Our Daily Bread will continue to do catering and serve carry-out lunches at its new location.
In the 10 years it has been in business - the past seven at the location above The Cellar - the bakery has grown from a stand-up counter into a booming business with faithful customers.
"At the new store, there will be 40 parking spaces, which we feel will much better accommodate our customers," Tu said.
Customers also have increasingly requested more gourmet items, such as four-layer tortes.
"These are the kinds of things you want but you don't have time to do," Tu said.
The new building has more space and is better suited to the bakery's needs.
"Right now we kind of feel like a homeowner whose kitchen is upstairs and family room is downstairs. There's just a lot of inefficient space in the current building."
The additional elbow room will enable the bakery to expand its wholesale business, which has doubled since it opened, Tu said. The bakery also will sell home-baking equipment such as pans and paper products.
The new hours will be 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday. The phone number will remain 953-2815.
