FORMER UVA WOMEN'S PLAYER READY TO ENTER A MAN'S WORLD

Jackie Campbell would like to be a trailblazer among women's coaches.

Campbell, now interning as an administrative assistant to Pittsburgh athletic director Ed Bozik, will be the first person to interview for a coaching position that Kentucky coach Rick Pitino says will go to a woman.

"For one thing, it would be a great learning experience," Campbell said. "And it would be great to be a first . . . I think it would be the opportunity of a lifetime."

Pitino said he will interview four or five candidates beginning June 4.

Campbell, 28, earned a marketing degree while playing basketball from 1979-83 at Virginia. Her internship at Pitt completes a master's degree in sports management from Massachusetts.

"She has all the things I want," Pitino said. "She has a basketball background, but she's an administrator."

The Kentucky coach said he wants to bring in an assistant who can handle more than basketball duties.

"Her job, outside of what takes place in practice, is to contact Coca-Cola, contact Pepsi, contact IBM, Xerox - all the major corporations - go in there with the academic background of Reggie Hanson and Johnathon Davis, our two seniors . . . so when they're done they have [job] interviews set up," Pitino said.

Pitino said the new coach also would serve as a liaison between himself and the Center for Academic and Tutorial Services, the academic arm for Kentucky athletics.

Campbell, a native of Willingboro, N.J., said she learned of the job opening through a newspaper story. She said she contacted Ray Oliver, Pitino's strength coach, whom she knew from his days at Pitt.
