Georgia-Pacific Corp. said it will close its Reading, Pa. paper mill on July 24 because of noncompetitive equipment, market conditions and poor profitability. The mill has 100 employees. Georgia-Pacific operates the former Great Northern Nekoosa container board mill at Big Island.

\ Westvaco Corp. reported lower earnings and record sales for the second quarter. The company's earnings for the period ending April 30 came to $45.9 million or 71 cents a share, down 21 percent from $58.2 million or 90 cents a share last year.

\ U.S. agricultural exports are running ahead of a year ago's pace, and Japan is leading the pack as usual, an Agriculture Department trade report shows. In the first six months of the 1990 fiscal year that began Oct. 1, export values totaled $21.9 billion, up 4 percent from the same period in fiscal 1989.
