The public will have free use of a $204,000 physical fitness center planned for Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount, according to Principal William Ownings.
Owings said the facility will be used "extensively" by the public after school hours and weekends, although an exact schedule has not been determined.
The Franklin County School Board has approved plans for a 3,200-square-foot addition to the high school's central gymnasium. Superintendent Len Gereau said an improved weight-training facility is necessary for the county's athletes to compete with neighboring schools.
Completion of the plan will depend on funding by the county Board of Supervisors. Cost of the facility has increased by more than 50 percent since supervisors approved $65,000 seed money last year. There is no money for the project in the county's 1990-91 budget.
