FRANKLIN COUNTY MULLS SCHOOL TOBACCO BAN

Franklin County, whose legislators have fought against smoking restrictions, may soon ban all tobacco products in public school buildings.

The proposed ban, under consideration by the School Board, would apply to employees, visitors, volunteers and anyone conducting business with the schools.

The policy would extend to activities such as basketball games held inside school buildings. Adults wanting to smoke would have to go outside.

Superintendent Len Gereau says the school system would do everything in its power to help employees who are "addicted" to tobacco.

School Board member Herman Craig, a smoker, said he had no desire to kick the habit but saw nothing wrong with the proposed policy. "I think it's fair," he said.

The School Board is scheduled to vote on the policy at its June 11 meeting.
