Hart, who turned 65 on Friday, is entering the final season of a five-year contract that ends June 30, 1991.
The announcement came as no surprise. Hart had said earlier this month that he would discuss his plans during the conference's annual spring meetings.
Hart told league officials he would be willing to stay on as a consultant after he retires, but no decision has been made, said Jimmy Wilder, a spokesman for the conference.
Hart was hired as the fourth commissioner in league history on July 1, 1986, replacing Ken Germann. Before joining the Southern Conference, Hart was athletic director at Missouri for eight years and at Louisville for five years.
Alan Hauser, NCAA faculty representative at Appalachian State, will head the committee that will search for Hart's replacement. Also appointed to the committee were The Citadel athletic director Walt Nadzak, East Tennessee State interim athletic director Janice Shelton, Furman athletic director Ray Parlier, conference vice president and Tennessee-Chattanooga NCAA faculty representative Paul Watson, VMI athletic director Eric Hyman and Western Carolina NCAA faculty representative Claude Teagarden.
