SLAUGHTER 1 BACK IN NCAA

Freshman Brandie Burton shot a 71 Friday to take the individual lead and keep Arizona State seven strokes ahead of rival Arizona through three rounds of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships.

Burton, looking to become the first freshman to win the tournament, completed three rounds at 221, one shot ahead of Arizona's Susan Slaughter of Floyd, Va. Slaughter had a third-round 74.

Burton and Slaughter will settle their duel today when Arizona State is paired against Arizona for the final round of team play on the 6,141-yard, par-72 Arthur Hills Golf Course.

"I was cringing big time the past two days," said Burton, who shot 75 in each of the first two rounds. "I knew it was coming. It was just a matter of time.

"My main priority is to perform well for my team. We're playing strong. We're playing really steady. I think we can do it."

Arizona State completed three rounds of team play at 902. Arizona's 909 was eight shots better than defending champion San Jose State. Texas and UCLA were at 923, followed by Stanford, 925; Florida, 926; Tulsa, 929; Auburn, 931; South Florida, 939; Southern Cal, 940; Indiana, 941; Kentucky, 947; Oklahoma State, 953; Kansas, 957; Furman, 959; and Georgia, 972.

Dina Ammaccapane of San Jose State and Dana Arnold of Southern Cal were at 223, one shot behind Slaughter in the individual standings.
