NEW RIVER PEOPLE

\ GLORIA POFF, a Girl Scout training specialist from Christiansburg, has been chosen by Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. one of the first 60 volunteers and staff in the nation to be certified as an instructor-of-trainers. She will train volunteers, who will in turn train leaders throughout the area.

The Mental Health Association of Montgomery County presented awards to six citizens for outstanding community service in the area of mental health.

Distinguished Service Awards went to \ ALICE WILLS for her work with the Interfaith Food Pantry, the shelter home, YMCA thrift shop and international students, and to\ BEULAH KLINE, a retired elementary school teacher who tutors and helps international students.

\ AILEEN MYERS, president of the Montgomery County Mental Health Association, received the Mattie Lou Smusz award for a year donated to the cause of the association.

\ DAVID N. MOORE, minister at the Glade Baptist Church and a volunteer chaplain at Montgomery Regional Hospital, received the Gunnar Teilmann Award for a member of the clergy who is dedicated to serving the needs of others.

\ GEORGE PORTERFIELD, principal of Christiansburg High School, was given the Mental Health Professional Award for his commitment to the promotion of mental health for students.

The Rev.\ HARRY B. SCOTT III, rector of St. Peter's Anglican Catholic Church in Christiansburg and founder and president of the Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program, received the Roswell E. Round award for an ongoing history of volunteerism in mental health.

\ PAULETTE AYERS, a certified nursing assistant at Pulaski Community Hospital, was awarded the hospital's 1990 Crystal Award for Excellence in Caring at the annual awards dinner commemorating National Hospital Week.

\ WILLIAM COMPTON, Blacksburg District Resource Assistant, earned the Commander's Award for public service from the United States Army. He has been an employee of the U.S. Forest Service since 1974 and was recognized for his support of the Army's training program and help in developing training sites for the ROTC programs.

\ VICTOR SCOTT KAUFMAN of Blacksburg and a junior majoring in history at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., was initiated into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society in May.

The Blacksburg Master Chorale officers for 1990-91 are:\ HERBERT MYERS, president;\ NORRINE BAILEY SPENCER, vice president;\ MARIE ARMSTRONG, secretary, and\ ALICE PAYNE, treasurer.

\ WILLIAM J. DECKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Decker of Riner and a 1986 graduate of Auburn High School, was graduated from the University of Virginia Phi Beta Kappa, completing double majors in astrophysics and mathematics. Decker started his graduate work in engineering physics at UVA in January.

\ JENNIFER POFF, daughter of Arthur and Karen Poff of Christiansburg and a graduate of Christiansburg High School, has been inducted into the Virginia Tech chapter of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. As a senior, Poff also is in Beta Gamma Sigma, a national honor society recognizing outstanding achievement in business.
