14-POUND BROWN RECORD CANDIDATE

A 14-pound, 12.8-ounce brown trout caught Thursday from the South Fork of the Holston River in Smyth County is a candidate for state record status.

The 30.6-inch fish was hooked on a Joe's Fly and 4-pound line by Mike Perkins, 23, of Bland.

John Jessee, a state fish biologist who examined the trout, said he saw no reason why Perkins catch won't be certified as a record by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Jessee said the trout was a beautiful fish that obviously had been in the river for a long time.

The current record is a 12-pound, 13-ounce brown from the North Fork of the Holston, landed July, 1985 by Daniel Dempsey of Sugar Grove.
