An attorney hired by the holder of the winning ticket, worth almost $8.7 million, telephoned the department to say the family wanted to wait, probably until Friday, before coming forward to claim the prize, said Lotto spokeswoman Paula Otto.
The lawyer, who did not identify himself or his client, gave the correct verification number for the winning ticket, Otto said. "They want to keep their anonymity for a few more days, I think," she said.
The winning numbers - 3-16-18-24-37-39 - were drawn Saturday night. The ticket was purchased Saturday at a convenience store in suburban Richmond.
The winner will take home Virginia's biggest Lotto prize since the game began earlier this year. The prize is worth $340,000 a year for 20 years.
