Martinsville's Ann King, a senior winger, and Pat Randall, the Bulldogs' coach, received Timesland's top honors in the first year of play for girls' soccer. King is player of the year, and Randall is coach of the year after her team went 11-1, including a 10-0 record in the round-robin schedule against the other five Timesland schools.
King heads the team, selected by the coaches of the six participating schools, that is dominated by four Martinsville players. The other Bulldogs making All-Timesland are senior midfielder Sarah King, senior forward Sonya Synnes and senior sweeper Rachel Taylor. The two Kings, and their brother, Rob, who plays for Martinsville's boys' team, are triplets.
Patrick Henry was next with three players: junior wing Beth Prillaman, sophomore center-forward Liz Wedemeyer and senior goalie Erin Garvin.
Cave Spring and Salem each had two players selected to the 11-girl squad. The Knights were represented by junior forward Lisa Beightol and senior midfielder Lisa Kahle, while the Spartans placed junior forward Amanda Jones and senior wing Angela Nuckols on the team.
The three Kings have always played soccer, but until this year the girls had no organized team at school.
"I heard at the beginning of the year we might have a team," said Ann King. "They tried to get one going last year and hadn't been able to do it."
The Kings got their start in soccer as 8-year-olds when their mother put them on a recreation-league team. "We weren't any good. We were one of the worst teams in the league," said Ann King. "But we stuck with it."
The sisters both played volleyball and Ann also ran cross country, as did Rob King. This will be the last year the triplets will be together since Ann and Rob plan to attend Virginia Tech next fall while Sarah is going to Mary Washington.
Randall's team was the most prepared for the new sport that was taken up by North Cross and Magna Vista in addition to the other schools represented on the All-Timesland team.
"We've had a recreation league team that we started four or five years ago and we had a girls' classic team the previous two falls," said Randall.
"I thought we'd do fairly well, but I didn't know exactly what to expect."
There were no playoffs in Group AA this year, but Cave Spring represented the Roanoke Valley District in the Group AAA Northwestern Region playoffs, losing its first game at Woodbridge.
