NEW HOCKEY LEAGUE IRONING OUT PROBLEMS

The new Global Hockey League should finish ironing out its legal and contractual problems by Thursday, one of the league's founders said Tuesday.

Michael Gobuty said that while problems remain, he's certain organizers can "get everyone on the same page."

"I think we have some basics getting there and we have really good people involved. Everything will be decided by Thursday," he said.

Representatives of 11 of the 14 planned franchises met Tuesday at the Providence Civic Center to finalize plans for the upcoming season, and to try to get all the franchise owners to commit financially to the league at a price tag of $400,000 each.

The GHL announced that Lyon, France; Prague, Czechoslovakia; Milan, Italy; Rotterdam, Holland; and Berlin, Germany; were expected to make up the European Division. The North American Division would be comprised of Providence, New York City, Birmingham, Ala.; Cleveland, Oh.; Miami, Fla.; Northern California; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Hamilton, Ontario.

Joseph O'Hara, a representative of the proposed Albany franchise, announced today that Albany would not be joining the league.
