BALLET SLIPPERS FOR EVERY BUDGET

In the 1950's flat shoes shaped like ballet slippers were a must.

They were the perfect accessory for mid-calf-length skirts propped up with petticoats.

For spring 1990, ballet slippers can be seen finishing off a suit look composed of stove-pipe leggings or stirrup pants worn with colorful longer jackets.

Or they balance off short skirts stretched over suntanned legs.

Like many of today's fads the current craze came from the house of Chanel. Quilting is the Chanel twist.

Of course these slippers are made of lovely leather and of course they cost a lot. A pair of violet kid ones with quilted black toe tips cost $255.

All-over quilted ones of black or white leather push the price up to $320 a pair.

But there are ballet slippers for every budget. The Agnes B. Boutique at 116 Prince Street carries classic black leather ones all year round for $46 a pair.

San Francisco Clothing at 975 Lexington Avenue (71st Street) is loaded with them. Whether made of striped or polka-dot fabric, bright colored leather or gold glitter-dusted material, the price is $39 a pair. This boutique also has minute versions for little girls for $37 a pair.

Alas, the Capezio stores, where the first ballet slippers for civilians were introduced way back when, no longer carry them.
