The award is based on the lowest casualty rates per 200,000 hours worked by employees, taking into account the volume of work and the number of fatalities, injuries and occupational illnesses reported to the Federal Railroad Administration.
Mrs. Mary W. Harriman founded the awards in 1913 in memory of her husband Edward H. Harriman, an American railroad pioneer. Her sons E. Roland Harriman and W. Averell Harriman also sponsored the program before their deaths.
NS won the award for railroads whose employees worked over 15 million hours during 1989.
Amtrak placed second in the big railroads competition, and Southern Pacific third.
