CONTROVERSIAL NUCLEAR PLANT PRODUCING POWER

The Seabrook nuclear plant has quietly generated electricity and fed it to commercial customers for the first time after almost two decades of regulatory delays, financial woes and mass protests.

The plant that became a symbol of the nation's anti-nuclear movement in the late 1970s and 1980s generated 65 megawatts of electricity that was fed into the New England power grid Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, the reactor was operating at 23 percent of capacity, generating 216 megawatts, which plant spokesman Rob Williams said could supply electricity to 185,000 homes.

Williams said the power would be reduced for more testing and brought up again to 30 percent in the next few days.
