TECH STAR WENTZ TOPS STATE TEAM

Virginia Tech's Len Wentz was named the Division I state baseball player of the year Wednesday by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors.

Wentz, a senior, was a first-team all-state selection for the second straight year. The third baseman led the Hokies in batting (.365), hits (77), doubles (20), total bases (123), walks (41), on-base average (.470) and slugging percentage (.583). Wentz, who moved from second base to third as a senior, also hit eight home runs and drove in 53 runs.

Old Dominion's Pat McMahon was named the state's Division I coach of the year after guiding the Monarchs to a 40-19 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Joining Wentz on the first team were outfielder Rod Emmons and pitcher Mike Williams of Virginia Tech, first baseman Marshall Simpson and catcher Andy Beasley of VMI and second baseman Bobby Rivell of Virginia.
