WILDER SIDESTEPS U.S. 58 EXPANSION

Gov. Douglas Wilder refused Wednesday to endorse a specific route for the expansion of U.S. 58 into a multilane, divided highway joining the Cumberland Gap and Virginia Beach.

"You're not going to get me to step into that one," Wilder said during a brief stop at Tri-City Regional Airport in Blountville, Tenn.

"I think the guiding principle would be that which would be the most economical, which would be the least disruptive and that which could be completed in the earliest possible time."
